A group of billionaires including Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates is heading to Greenland in the search for treasure.
The aptly-titled Billionaire Club is investing billions of dollars in Greenland’s glaciers in the quest to find copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum. Critical minerals that can power the green energy transition and in turn, their portfolios.
Greenland’s Disko Island and Nuussuaq Peninsula are experiencing alarming climate change with glaciers melting at a rapid pace. Scientists expect glaciers in Greenland to disappear entirely in 20-30 years but before they do, the Billionaire Club is investing in teams of geologists, geophysicists, cooks, pilots and mechanics to take samples, fly drones and helicopters and do everything they can to measure the electromagnetic field of the ground and map the layers below.
This is being done in a bid to find the ingredients needed to fuel a new wave of energy and while a picture of climate change in action, the current situation of the glaciers has made exploration and mining processes easier and more accessible.
It is thought that within the glaciers, there are enough critical minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles and with the help of artificial intelligence, the excavation is expected to begin in the middle of 2023.
