A lean, single-family office with a related investment team, supporting a highly successful, hands-on Principal who is a technology entrepreneur and acts as the de facto CIO, retaining final investment decision-making authority. The organization’s primary focus is legacy, estate planning, and multi-generational wealth preservation rather than pure investment growth. The structure is complex, spanning approximately eight trusts, multiple U.S. and international properties, two investment funds, foreign bank accounts, a foundation, and aviation and other passion assets.
About the Role
We are seeking a senior, low-ego Managing Director to bridge finance, investments, operations, compliance, and estate planning within the family office. This role sits within the family office itself, distinct from the Principal’s separate investment team, and is an individual contributor position, reporting to the Principal and the Controller, with no team of its own. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to manage and implement, rather than source, investments, and who is comfortable operating in a very lean environment. Given the size of the team, the scope of this role is expected to evolve over time, with additional responsibilities added beyond what’s outlined here. You will work closely with the Principal as a trusted senior partner, provide additional management capacity to the Controller, and partner closely with the Chief of Staff, including assisting with private and lifestyle matters as needed, while helping establish clearer accountability and reporting lines across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and monitor the existing investment portfolio (investment accounts, properties, trusts, two investment funds, and other holdings) rather than sourcing new opportunities
- Coordinate with private equity managers, attend annual meetings, and track investment developments and SPVs
- Ensure investments remain aligned with the Principal’s estate plan, trust structures, liquidity needs, and tax considerations
- Support cash-flow management and forecasting across the family office
- Bridge finance, investments, operations, compliance, and estate planning, working closely with the Controller (finance, accounting, tax, compliance)
- Partner closely with the Chief of Staff, assisting with private and lifestyle matters as needed given the lean size of the team
- Help establish accountability, reporting lines, and follow-through across a currently flat organizational structure
- Liaise with lawyers, bankers, tax advisers, real estate brokers, and other external advisors on family-directed strategies and initiatives
- Maintain appropriate risk management and internal controls
- Take on additional responsibilities as they arise; the scope of this role will grow beyond what’s listed here given the lean size of the team
Ideal Background
- Strong preference for Family Office experience, given the complexity and the personal, structural, tax, and estate dimensions of the role
- Backgrounds considered: Family Office CFO / senior finance operator; CFO/COO from a hedge fund or investment environment; senior legal/GC profile with broad family-office exposure; senior operator from a family business or entrepreneurial environment
- Private equity experience is a plus, though compensation will not be directly competitive with PE fund pay scales
- Not a fit for a pure accountant or a traditional investment-sourcing professional
- No ego, true team player who rolls up their sleeves and gets things done; this is an individual contributor role with no team to delegate to
- High EQ and sound judgment, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities in a lean, fast-moving environment
- Leads by example, earning trust and influence through demonstrated knowledge and impact rather than a top-down, alpha-dog management style
- Discretion and professional ethics, with the ability to work in a privacy-focused environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field; MBA or similar advanced degree preferred
