A newly set-up Family Office is hiring for a CIO for their London office. The position will report to the Family Office principal, existing CEO of the groups Family Office in Europe and to be created Investment Committee within the Group.

The ideal candidate will currently be in a similar Chief Investment Officer/Deputy Chief Investment Officer position to research and recommend investments. As a functional CIO they will have a solid multi-asset class investment background with a preference to direct investments in private markets, specifically Private Equity, Real Estate and Debt. 

Experience in strategic asset allocation and manager selection would be critical. With the level of experience this role requires, one would be expected to have relationships with various fund managers across different financial hubs in Western Europe and N.America.

The applicant must already be based in the UK.

Strategy and governance

  • Actively helps create, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive family financial strategy and investment policy.
  • Develop and oversee the management and strategic development of the Family Office.
  • Oversight of all family assets, including investment accounts, properties, trusts and other interests.
  • Oversee preparation of financial statements, tax returns, and periodic portfolio reports.
  • Organises and implements an asset allocation strategy built around the principles and benchmarks as indicated and agreed upon by the Investment Committee.
  • Keeps a macro view of the global situation, derives impact on the portfolio and raises red flags to the Principal, CFO of the group and Investment Committee.
  • Continuously monitors the portfolio with different simulations to assess underlying risk (e.g. Monte Carlo Simulation) and to ensure it lies within the risk and returns parameters.
  • Coordinates and prepares the Investment Committee presentations and keeps track of the overall governance (i.e. committees with money managers)

Direct investments and portfolio management

  • Build sizable direct investment portfolio in the private markets. Actively sources deal flow, manage, monitor investments and reporting investment results for the Family Office.
  • Establish relationships, networking and connections to support the development and implementation of direct investment in broad variety of sectors in the United Kingdom and Western Europe.
  • Develop and implement the Family Office strategic investment and operational plan.
  • Implement a robust and thorough monitoring process for the Family’s investments so that investment decisions can be properly evaluated.
  • Performs deep dive analysis on different sectors in the direct investments, liaising with the investment team in the Group and outsourced financial team.
  • Evaluate full due diligence (commercial, financial, legal, management, operations etc) from the private equity perspective as part of the process of investments in private sector.
  • Sources, selects, diversifies, and monitors the money managers who carry out the investing of various aspects of the portfolio, including cash management, bonds, equities and others (definition of mandates, rebalancing of assets if needed, etc.)
  • Manages the relationship with managers, brokers and banks (incl. negotiation of fees)

Middle and back office

  • Puts in place adequate processes (e.g. due diligence) – Institute secure money movement procedures and routinely review cash movements to ensure a full reconciliation of inflows and outflow.
  • Implements adequate IT infrastructure- Detect and resolve new threats such as cyberthreat monitoring process.
  • Ensure safety and security of client assets through selection of custodian services.
  • Provides consolidated view of the portfolio composition and key metrics.
  • Monitors regulatory filings, tax efficiency and liaising with external advisors to ensure this is optimised.
  • Encourage collaboration with Family Office/Group tax and legal counsel to help maximize after-tax rates or returns.
  • Implementation of estate planning and estate tax reductions techniques, employment of insurance strategies and non-investment centric activities that can help grow a Family Office balance sheet.

Qualifications and experience

  • Successful at the creation and implementation of the long-term investment strategy with key focus in direct investments for the Family Office.
  • Proven track record negotiating and managing transactions: An applicant needs to demonstrate experience of analysing exit strategies and building the investment team for specific projects in the private market on a deal by deal basis.
  • Experience working with lawyers, trustees, accountants, real estate brokers and other external advisors affecting family-directed strategies and initiatives and charged with Family Office tax and accounting reporting.
  • Effective in managing cash management, including understanding sources of income, current and long-term liabilities and the overall leverage and liquidity portfolio of the principal and overall portfolio managed by the Family Office.
  • Working closely with Cybersecurity professionals (inhouse or external) to protect financial assets and data associated with investment activities of family office.
  • Responsible for evaluating the cash flow requirements of the private market portfolio. Tax ramifications of any investments considering differentiated liquidity provisions and nuanced tax consequences.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritize workflow and manage multiple projects.
